When you woke up this morning, did you hit the snooze button? Did you pick up your phone? Did you take the pup outside? Did you roll out of bed and curse the day? Did you put your shoes on and head to the gym? Maybe you got up and realized you were going to be late for work? Though about a million people will tell you the same thing, the first 10 minutes of the day are some of the most important, if not the most important, minutes of the day. What did you do with that time?
Now, I think we can all agree when we first open our eyes to the morning light shining through the windows, the last thing we want is a task to complete before getting out of bed. Don’t we all have enough to think about during the day? I, for sure, used to get out of bed, and just get right to the day. No pause to realize that, hey, I get another day, one I have never seen before, one that will have challenges and triumphs, one that might pass like so many before, but nonetheless, one more day. This was a problem. Without taking a second to realize what I had, what I had been given, and what I had worked so hard for, I never realized what I had. A roof over my head, blankets to keep me warm, a bed to rest on, a glass of clean water on the nightstand, the list continues.
It wasn’t until a year and a half ago or so that I began to challenge my morning. The goal was that every morning when I woke up, I wouldn’t move, don’t reach for the phone, just open my eyes, take a deep breath, and just say thank you. Now, that sounds a little religious, and maybe it is. To each their own right? But I don’t think it needs to be religious at all. You don’t need to tell anyone who you are thanking; it could be your god, the universe, your parents, your loved ones, or even yourself. Something that has happened in your life, be it internal or external, granted you another day.
That is my challenge to anyone who is reading this. When you wake up tomorrow, don’t move; take a deep breath, do that morning stretch, and just say thank you. I promise it only takes a couple of seconds.
